We restored Tanami a couple of years ago and she still looks like new. An incredible amount of detailed work (and money) went into this uncompromising restoration and she now has a new mast + sails to complete the look.
Ironically she's named after the Tanami Desert and the name means 'never dry' which works for a yacht but if you've seen the endless red desert in the top end of Australia, the indigenous tribes have a sense of humour.
A classic 40ft Peter Cole design, she was built in Sydney in 1966/67 and features elegant lines and gorgeous details. She was a modern design for her time and is still very fast in the right wind. There's a special sensation being behind the wheel as she powers up on the wind.
The photographs really don't do her justice and I'll try and shoot some more detailed shots but she's a breathtaking machine and restored with as much detail as possible - a labour of love.
We've just finished her winter maintenance schedule which involves stripping down most of the fittings to repolish, restore and allow for fresh coats of varnish. it's an expensive, time consuming process but it helps to have Mandelberg pushing thing along.
I am the owner of Mistral IX (sistership to Tanami) which we keep at Lovett Bay in Pittwater. Do you have any information on the history of these boats as we have just completed a refit and would like to know more of the history. Phil Pryke pphil@bigpond.net.au
